Customer Story: Inscripta
Inscripta is a company that offers a speech recognition solution for documentation for the healthcare and social care sectors. They had a need for updating their Android and iOS applications, and a consultant from us came in to help them.
Below you can find our interview with Joni Aaltonen from Inscripta, where he tells us more about them and the project. You’ll also find insights from Joni on when bringing a consultant is the best solution — and whether hiring an IT consultant was the correct decision for Inscripta in this situation.
Inscripta’s customer experience of working with Marvel Consulting
Joni Aaltonen, CTO of Inscripta
“The cooperation has been effective, and we got the right consultant fast. We were able to start the project quickly, the collaboration worked, and the quality of the work met our expectations — in other words, it was good!”
Could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about what you do at Inscripta?
“I’m Joni Aaltonen, CTO and one of the founders of Inscripta. The company was originally founded in 2015, but I joined full-time in 2017. I’ve been with Inscripta for basically ten years now, and things have evolved quite a lot during that time. In the beginning, there was a lot of hands-on application development, but these days, my work focuses more on overseeing software quality and other responsibilities that come with the CTO role. My background is in web application development, which I’ve been doing for about 20 years.”
How would you describe Inscripta to someone who’s never heard of you?
“Our slogan is “better with speech”, or in Finnish, “puhumalla parempaa terveydenhuoltoa”. Our goal is to save healthcare professionals’ time by giving them better tools for creating patient records. For example, a doctor can use our tool to create the patient record by speech, and focus on the patient when meeting them. Based on surveys, the time saved ranges from half an hour to two hours, and on average it is about 45 minutes.”
How important is software to your company?
“Software is the very core of what we do, since we’re a technology company. It’s important to us that we don’t rely on intermediaries for technology, but rather build our own solutions. Our users can send feedback directly to us, and we process it to make sure the service works in the best possible way. All of our technology, including speech recognition, is built in-house.”
Why did you decide to bring in a consultant for your project?
“We wanted to bring in a consultant to save our own work time. We needed to update our Android and iOS applications. We had the capability to do it ourselves, but it’s not our core expertise — our strength lies in speech recognition.
A support library needed updating, and we realized it would make sense to outsource that. The project’s scope was easy to define and assign to a consultant. This allowed us to keep our focus on our core work and what really matters to us.”
Why did you choose a consultant instead of, for example, hiring an employee?
“Our need is occasional rather than continuous, so it makes sense to bring in a consultant only when needed.”
Why did you choose Marvel Consulting?
“We’ve worked with Marvel Consulting several times already! The first time goes back to our early days. One of Inscripta’s original founders knew Tommi Lindeman (one of Marvel Consulting’s founders) from before, and we used his services in an earlier project. Later, Marvel Consulting reached out to see if we needed additional expertise. We had an upcoming Android update project, and since our previous experience with Marvel Consulting was very positive, we decided to collaborate on the project.
In this latest case, the process was very straightforward. We had previously worked with Marvel Consulting and had a good experience, with smooth cooperation and deadlines being met. So, when a new need came up, it was an easy decision to contact Marvel Consulting again. The same consultant wasn’t available this time, but working with the new consultant has also gone very well.”
In what situations would you recommend hiring a consultant to other companies?
“I’d recommend bringing in a consultant when you have a clearly defined project and you need to accomplish something specific. Or, when you need temporary extra resources to solve a problem that your own team doesn’t have the capacity to handle at that moment.”
Was hiring a consultant the right solution for you? Did the problem that the consultant was hired to help with get solved?
“Yes! The cooperation has been smooth, and the problem was solved. The solution was also found quickly, and we were able to focus our resources on things that are important to us and within our core competence. In this situation, hiring a consultant was definitely the right solution.”
What worked well in the collaboration?
“What worked well was that even though the consultant from our previous project wasn’t available, another skilled person was found quickly. We didn’t have to wait around for availability. The project scope was well-defined, the consultant quickly understood what needed to be done, and the work started right away. Everything rolled forward smoothly and with high quality. Communication also worked great; any issues were addressed quickly, and fixes were delivered fast. Overall, the collaboration worked really well!”
Would you recommend Marvel Consulting to others — and why?
“Yes, I would. The cooperation has been effective, and we got the right consultant fast. We were able to start the project quickly, the collaboration worked, and the quality of the work met our expectations — in other words, it was good!”
